I'll tell you all you have to know about the new pope. If you're interested in thinking about him (but not so interested in actually looking into the situation.)
Raised by almost anti-religious people, I am biased in a significant way -- and I too grew to be ultra-rational, just a little more tolerant than my parents, not that they're hateful people -- they're tolerant of my tolerance, they have a little less respect than me for those who believe in the supernatural.
Which I don't think is the worst thing in the world: they'd never force their opinions on anyone. They just don't get it.
There are many things other people don't get, which is okay as long as it stays at that.
To me, the pope is just another person, and even to those very religious. But it's hard to see him that way, as even if he stays as grounded as possible, it's hard to be another person if you've got that much power of that many people.
It's similar to political leaders -- I guess I don't know much about the 'elections' of popes, but they must fundamentally be political as well.
As somebody indoctrinated by democracy from an early age, it's hard for me to imagine accepting a new leader that I had no part in choosing -- I mean, I tolerate my king, I guess, but I'm not happy about it.
